British intelligence was alarmed to discover a large number of German 'tourists' recently swarming around Cairo, all young, healthy males who appeared to be most uncomfortable in their civilian clothing. This at the same time that the city was awash with native rumours of a newly-discovered temple somewhere up the Nile containing some sort of magical jewel. So when the German tourists boarded a rented steamer late one night and disappeared, there was nothing for it but to send someone to keep a watchful eye on Chancellor Bismarck's boyos.
